Background

The Katy Storage and Transportation (Katy) facility, owned by Enstor Gas, LLC (Enstor) became the first gas storage facility in the United States to become carbon neutral. To reduce baseline emissions, Enstor swapped out their lean burn engines for rebuilt VHP Series Five engines from INNIO Waukesha. The remaining emissions are offset using carbon credits purchased through the American Carbon Registry.

Product Spotlight

Waukesha’s “reUp” remanufacturing upgrade program provided nine rebuilt VHP Series Five engines allowing the Katy storage facility to upgrade to the latest technologies such as a modified VHP Series Five piston design which improves combustion, extends service intervals, and reduces hydrocarbons, all while reusing their existing infrastructure, compressors, and most of their existing package. The VHP engine was ultimately selected for its ability to reduce NOx, CO, CO2, and CH4 effectively and simultaneously. In addition to the reduction in emissions, Enstor took advantage of the VHP Series Five Miller Cycle which keeps fuel consumption lower and on par with a comparative lean burn engine.

REsults

The new remanufactured VHP Series Five engines reduce roughly 90% of Methane in the facilities exhaust and reduce CO2e intensity by about 20%. The engines benefit existing operations, lower operating expenses due to longer service intervals, achieve carbon neutrality, meet EPA standards, and reduce Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, all while also benefiting the Katy customers.
