Flare to Power
Converting natural gas flaring into useful electricity.
What is it?
Flaring is the burning of waste gas from oil and gas operations and a major contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Government agencies around the world are introducing regulations to curb this practice with the Nigerian government recently fining oil and gas companies $49 million for onshore flaring. In April 2023, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fined an oil and gas company $27.5 million for violating the Clean Air Act. And these are just two of many instances of government fines for flaring violations.*
However, this wasted energy can be converted into clean energy – and potentially increase annual global revenues by up to $82 billion.**

How It Works
Our Waukesha VHP Series Five gas engines are part of the solution. They are proven to help mitigate flaring while providing businesses and communities the ability to generate reliable, sustainable power whenever and wherever it’s needed. The Waukesha VHP Series Five engine (rich-burn, natural gas) converts wasted energy (natural gas flaring) into electrical power. The electrical power can then be used onsite or be sold for third-party usage. In this way, flared natural gas is converted into a beneficial form of energy – and a potentially lucrative revenue stream.
The Waukesha Engine Advantage
For gas and oil operations across the world, Waukesha equipment delivers a number of proven advantages for maximizing revenue and reducing emissions. Our VHP Series Five engines can:
- Remove up to 1.3 million tons of CO2-equivalent emissions annually
- Convert over 200 MW of flare gas to power applications globally
- Run on nearly any gas without treatment
- Help operations avoid expensive government fines
- Provide a relatively low cost of ownership
In addition, Waukesha VHP Series Five engines can be used on-site as a power source, eliminating the need for other energy sources. And, because the monetization of flare gas can take many forms, they can also be sold for third-party use – to grid operators and anyone looking to power advanced computing systems.
